This week, thousands of Americans picked up the phone to help the President prevent a tax hike on middle-class families.

We can’t stop now. Republican leadership in the House of Representatives is still refusing to allow a vote on a bill that would prevent 98 percent of American families from paying higher taxes next year.

If your taxes go up by more than $2,000 in a couple weeks, there’s only one reason: because a few dozen Republican representatives refuse to ask the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans to pay their fair share.

Your representative has already signed the petition — but there are dozens more who still need to step up. Log on to the call tool today and ask fellow supporters who live in Republican districts to call their representatives now.

Voters have already made their voices heard on this issue. As the President said at his first press conference after the election:

“If there was one thing that everybody understood was a big difference between myself and Mr. Romney, it was, when it comes to how we reduce our deficit, I argued for a balanced, responsible approach, and part of that included making sure that the wealthiest Americans pay a little bit more.

“I think every voter out there understood that that was an important debate, and the majority of voters agreed with me … by the way, more voters agreed with me on this issue than voted for me.”

Yet a handful of Republicans in the House of Representatives are still fighting for the same top-down approach that’s been tried — and has failed.

Whether you voted for the President or not, he’s fighting to keep taxes low for 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses, because he believes we need to grow the economy from the middle out.

My first run for office started way back in 1995. Back then I knocked on doors, stood in front of grocery stores shaking hands, and printed my own flyers at the local copy shop.

I haven’t won everything I’ve taken on since then, but I’ve learned a heck of a lot from the challenges I’ve faced — and I’ve never regretted a single fight.

This time, losing just isn’t an option. Too much is at stake. Millions of Americans have fought too long and too hard for health care reform, the opportunity for their kids to go to college, and for a steady job with a good wage. But a Romney-Ryan White House would roll back so much of our progress.

Just remember, these are the guys that talk about repealing the Affordable Care Act on their first day in office, taking away a woman’s right to make her own health decisions, turning Medicare into a voucher system — and giving huge tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires at the expense of middle-class families.

Friend (yes, we’re friends) —

In 2007, I spent a few months in Iowa before the caucuses, getting all sorts of folks fired up to cast their vote for this guy named Barack Obama.

What I remember most: It was shockingly, painfully cold. And fun.

Actually, super fun. And easier than I thought, to talk to total strangers and ask them to vote. That’s why I traveled to 25 other states for the President in 2008, and why I’m volunteering again. Well, that and because we don’t want to see the progress we’ve made on everything from student loans to health care get turned back.

If you join, you’ll be doing exactly what I did — going to one of the most critical states for a few weeks leading up to Election Day, and making sure people there go to the polls.

You’ll make phone calls, knock on doors, and have one-on-one conversations with people about why you support President Obama. It’s important, fun stuff.

Yeah, you’ll be a volunteer, but the local staff, fellow volunteers, and people you meet will make it worth your while in donuts, love, and appreciation (and let’s face it, donuts are legit).

Whenever you arrive, they’ll want you to stay through Election Day — and take my word for it, that’ll be the best part. On Election Day in 2008, I was in Florida with a bunch of awesome young volunteers (and their sweet robot, pic below). Where will I go this year? Where will you go?

Some great folks we know are looking for a friendly place to stay.

A group of the most dedicated organizers and volunteers will be coming to Northern Virginia for the remaining weeks of the campaign. They heard we’re looking to run a fierce ground game for President Obama this fall — and they want to be a part of it.

But here’s the thing: They need somewhere to stay. And I’m hoping you can lend them a hand with that.

What do you say? Can you host a volunteer in the District for a week or more?

The folks who are coming won’t ask for much. Many of them will gladly sleep on a comfy couch or an air mattress, or in a small spare room you might have. They’ll take the Metro or provide their own transportation to and from Northern Virginia, and they’ll be out during the day, working hard to move our organizing along.

But I bet they’ll come back at night with some amazing stories about the people they’ve reached and the energy they’re sparking — stories that you otherwise might not get to hear.
